Dairy free nutella recipe

The famed hazelnut chocolate spread is a crowd favourite all over the world, and thanks to a bit of recipe testing, those of us who prefer enjoying food on the more wholesome side don’t have to miss out on this iconic flavour combo, either.

Our dairy free, refined sugar free Nutella is made with just four simple ingredients:

  • Roasted hazelnuts

  • Cacao powder,

  • Brown rice syrup

  • Coconut oil

This recipe works best with a high-speed blender, but don’t worry if you haven’t got one - we have an alternative recipe for you.

Here’s our wholefood, dairy free Nutella recipe those of you with a high-speed blender

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups raw hazelnuts

  • ¼ cup cacao powder

  • Brown rice syrup to taste

  • 2-4 Tbsp melted coconut oil - this can be omitted but it won’t be as smooth and spreadable

Method:

  1. Dry roast the hazelnuts in a pan over medium heat until the skins begin to crack and the nuts become fragrant - about 5 minutes.

  2. Set them aside for 10 minutes, or until cool enough to handle.

  3. Place the hazelnuts in a clean tea towel and use the towel to rub the skins off.

  4. Pop the hazelnuts in a high speed blender and blend to a fine powder. Depending on the strength of your blender, you might even be able to blend it into a nut butter consistency.

  5. Add in the cacao powder and two tablespoons of melted coconut oil. Blend until well combined.

  6. Next, mix in one tablespoon of brown rice syrup and give it a taste. Add in one tablespoon at a time until you’ve reached your desired level of sweetness.

  7. Finally, check the spread’s consistency. If it’s not smooth enough, add coconut oil a little bit at a time until it reaches your desired smoothness.

Don’t have a high speed blender? No problem - we’ve got a few solutions.

The main ingredient you’ll need to sub out is the hazelnuts.

Premade natural hazelnut butter would be perfect, but we understand that it can sometimes be hard to come by. While almond butter or cashew butter won’t quite give you that lovely hazelnut flavour, they make a delicious substitute.

Ingredients:

  • 250g jar of hazelnut, cashew or almond butter

  • 2 Tbsp cacao powder

  • Brown rice syrup to taste

  • Up to 2 Tbsp melted coconut oil

Method:

  1. In a blender, stand mixer, or manually in a bowl, combine the nut butter, cacao powder and 1 Tbsp of brown rice syrup.

  2. Give it a taste. Add in one tablespoon at a time until you’ve reached your desired level of sweetness.

  3. Finally, check the spread’s consistency. If it’s not smooth enough, add coconut oil a little bit at a time until it reaches your desired smoothness.

If you want to make this recipe nut-free, just swap out the nut butter for sunflower seed butter.
